Pura Vida

The less visible part of culture

The most common phrase you will hear in Costa Rica is "Pura Vida." It means "pure life," but it is said in almost any situation! It is used as a greeting or a farewell, an "oh well" or "no worries."

But beyond it just being a saying, Pura Vida is indicative of the Costa Rican outlook on life. Ticos value taking life as it comes and not stressing about work or changes in life. In politics, this manifests itself by a relative peacefulness. In society, it makes for an event-oriented instead of time-oriented culture. In religion, it looks like a casual approach to faith with a high focus on inclusion. So, when visiting Costa Rica, remember that being easy-going is the norm, times and meetings are always relative, and above all, enjoy whatever life brings you!
